What is The Wine Box Project?

The Wine Box Project is a free community art event being held at the same time (and under the auspices of) the Fleurieu Biennale Art Prize.

The Project is run by a group of enthusiastic local volunteers and is funded, in part, by a grant from the City of Onkaparinga.

Anyone is invited to paint or decorate a blank wine box and the painted boxes will be displayed in an exhibition at the Good Bank Gallery, 141 Main Road, McLaren Vale. The exhibition will open on 5 June and the boxes will be added as they are created until 28 June. So it will be an ever growing exhibition throughout the month of June.

How can I be part of The Wine Box Project?

We will provide you with a free numbered blank wine box (flat packed), an entry form and these conditions of entry.

You will turn the wine box into a work of art.  You can do this any way you like.  For example, you can paint on it, draw on it, cut into it, cover it in glitter …… your creativity is the only limitation. You can choose to sign your box, or not.

You will then return the wine box to us – with your completed entry form – for inclusion in The Wine Box Project exhibition.

Does The Wine Box Project have a theme?

We don’t want to limit your creativity so are happy for you to complete your box however you like.  For example, if you are a painter you can turn your box into a landscape, or a still life, or a portrait, or an abstract.  If, however, you like to work to a theme, you can use the same theme as the Fleurieu Art Prize - ‘A Sense of Place’

What and where is the exhibition.

Completed wine boxes will be exhibited at the Good Bank Gallery, 141 Main Road Mclaren Vale from 5-28 June 2026. The Good Bank Gallery is open Fridays (12-3), Saturdays and Sundays (10-3).

Some boxes will be completed before the exhibition opens and will be on display from day one. Some boxes will be completed during the exhibition and will be added to the display as they are delivered. The intention is that the exhibition will evolve and grow over the month of June, so we encourage you to visit - and revisit - while the exhibition is on.

Is there a prize?

The Wine Box Project is a community art event. There is no prize.

What happens to the boxes?

When you complete your entry form you will be asked whether you want to donate your box or collect your box.

  • If you choose donate, we will offer your box for sale by silent auction – with all proceeds going to the Fleurieu Art Foundation.  The Fleurieu Art Foundation is a not for profit organisation. All proceeds of sale will go towards supporting future arts events in the district.  You can choose to allow bidders to see your name in the silent auction process or remain anonymous.
  • If you choose collect, you will need to collect your box either from
    • the Good Bank Gallery on Sunday 28 June (the last day of the exhibition) between hours of 10.00 and 3.00, or
    • the Fleurieu Arthouse from 11.00-4.00 Monday 29 June-Sunday 5 July.

Boxes that are donated for sale, but do not sell, will be donated to a local winery to use at cellar door. Boxes that are not donated, but are not collected within the time frames set out above, will also be donated to a local winery to use at cellar door. Nothing will be wasted.

Where can I collect a wine box?

Free blank wine boxes will be available for collection at various places in the district including

  • at the Fleurieu Arthouse and the Good Bank Gallery during the month of June
  • at the Willunga Farmers Market on 23 May, 6 and 13 June 2026.

Follow us on social media for details of other collection points @thewineboxproject (Facebook and Instagram) or check our website www.artprize.com.au

You can also contact us on artprize@artprize.com.au.  We are happy to make ad hoc collection arrangements – particularly if you need more than one box (for example, for artist groups or community groups who want to get involved).

Where can I work on my box?

You can pick up your box and take it home to work on.

Or we will have boxes, art supplies and a place to work at

  • the Good Bank Gallery – in June, during opening hours (see above) or
  • the Willunga Farmers Market on 23 May, 6 and 13 June
  • The Fleurieu Arthouse 11.00 – 4.00 seven days

Please note that children participating at any of these venues must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Where do I deliver my completed box?

Completed boxes must be delivered to the Good Bank Gallery either

  • before the exhibition opens, on Wednesday 3 June from 11.00 to 3.00, or
  • at any time when the exhibition is open on Fridays (12-5), Saturdays and Sundays (10-3), from 5 to 28 June.

How will the silent auction work?

The silent auction will be held online. We will provide log on details once the exhibition has started. Bidding will close at 4pm on Friday 26 June. Successful bidders will be advised on Saturday 27 June using the contact details provided, and asked to collect their purchases

  • at the Good Bank Gallery on Sunday 28 June between 10.00 and 3.00, or
  • at the Fleurieu Arthouse from 11.00-4.00 Monday 29 June-Sunday 5 July.

Unless prior arrangements are agreed, uncollected purchases may also be

  • offered for resale (at a time and in a manner decided by The Wine Box Project), or
  • donated to a local winery to use at cellar door.

Bidders who do not collect their purchases may request to have their purchase price refunded, less a reasonable small fee to cover administration.

What else do I need to know?

There is a maximum of three entries per person.

The Wine Box Project has a complete discretion about which boxes will be displayed (and can exclude boxes from display at any time.)

You enter the Wine Box Project at your own risk. While we will do our best to look after entries, some boxes may be damaged (for example, when they are moved).
